Chapters 2-6

"He could not remember what had happened, but he knew in his dream that in some way the lives of his mother and his sister had been sacrificed to his own. It was one of those dreams which, while retaining the characteristic dream scenery, are a continuation of one's intellectual life, and in which one becomes aware of facts and ideas which still seem new and valuable after one is awake. The thing that now suddenly struck Winston was that his mother's death, nearly thirty years ago, had been tragic and sorrily in a way that was no longer possible. Tragedy, he perceived, belonged to the ancient time, to a time whether were still privacy, love, and friendship, and the members of a family stood by one another without needing to know. the reason."

In the quote up above I feel as if George Orwell is trying to tell us that we should not take advantage of the people we love and spend more time with them, because we never know when you will separate from them. Orwell talks more about his mother rather than his father and far more highly of her. Which makes me think that his mother was around way more than his father, maybe because he was off to work while his mother stayed home with their kids. Orwell distinctly remembers how his mother had given up her and his sister lives as a sacrifice for his own. His mother would do anything for him, which some mothers today would do anything for their children as well. Mothers are very close to their children and have a great and powerful connection with their children. In this quote I don't believe Orwell is only talking about only mothers, it seems like he is referring to anyone you love or care about, which to him would be his mother. Be there for those who are there for you and good to you and treat them with the great respect.

  1. Hello friend!
I like how you talked about the role his mother and father played in his life. Women in the Party were viewed as more domestic so they stayed at home more and took care of the children. It would make sense that Winston would have a better relationship with her than his father, whom we don't hear much about. You did a great job
    Talk to you soon :)
